With ChatGPT and other generative AI, two major problems are emerging in the field of education: students (and not only students) tend to copy and paste answers without thinking, accumulating a cognitive debt; teachers need to be trained to adapt their methods. This research by MIT Your brain on ChatGPT shows that by outsourcing too much to the machine, we lose our analytical, synthetic and critical faculties.
Student mode: Automatically transforms basic questions ("Do my homework") into prompts that stimulate critical thinking. The AI becomes a Socratic tutor who guides rather than a machine that lays down a ready-made answer.
Teacher mode: Generates teaching sequences and assignments that encourage students to work on their own, with the AI acting as a methodological coach.
